Everyday, there are people all over the world who have to fight to survive. Light Gives Heat is a charity foundation that helps a group of women in Uganda do more than just survive. It gives them a chance to make a living wage. There are sixty of these Ugandan women who meet every day in the town center and make thousands of paper beads. While these beads can’t be sold in their own country for a profit, Light Gives Heat buys them at a fair market value.
I call these women the Suubi women, because Suubi means “hope” in Ugandan. These women have hope because there are people who are giving them a chance to make a way to provide for themselves and their families when they had no way. Each necklace you buy has a card in the box that has the story of the woman who made that necklace. It helps us understand the challenges in their lives as well as gives us a reminder to pray for them. Our chapter of the Homeschool National Honor society, Sigma Lambda, chose to support this work because it is already effective. Instead of creating another charity mission, we decided to support one that was already helping people in need. “Wan Wenge Waribe Kacel” is Acholi for “We are all connected together”. The proceeds from each necklace go 100% to support these women and provide for their needs.
